Design Law 6 — Status-Signal Alignment
Peer status points at pro-social behavior.

The law
The village aligns the natural social-status signals children use to sort each other with the pro-social behaviors the community wants to see more of.
Children will always sort each other by status. Every human community throughout history has done this, and children do it faster and more honestly than adults. The question is never whether status will operate; the question is only what status is pointed at.
The village points it at kindness, service, and demonstrated care for others.
Why
Every existing children's platform points status at the wrong things. Follower counts. Streaks. Filter mastery. Loudness. Cruelty as humor. The platforms did not choose these signals as an act of will; they emerged because the platforms optimized for engagement, and these signals engage.
The village does not optimize for engagement. It optimizes for the formation of the child. The status signals that emerge are therefore different, because the underlying incentive is different.
- A child who does evidenced service is visible in the village (Law 4 credit, Law 5 broadcast access, priority in others' feeds).
- A child who is kind to newcomers is visible.
- A child who repairs harm they caused is visible.
- A child who helps someone who cannot easily reciprocate is especially visible.
The visibility is the status signal. The status signal shapes what other children admire. What other children admire shapes what children do.
The honest naming
This is a form of social engineering. The village does not hide that. Every human community that has ever functioned has engineered its status signals — through elders, through religious practice, through stories, through what the community praised and what it did not praise. The current children's platforms have simply outsourced the engineering to engagement algorithms whose optimization target is orthogonal to child flourishing.
The village takes the engineering back and points it at the flourishing.
Named plainly: if the children in the village come to admire the peers who help others, the children in the village will help others more. This is old. Every functional village throughout human history has known it. The current substrate has forgotten it because the current substrate is not a village.
The specific mechanic
Status is downstream of Law 4 (credit) and Law 5 (broadcast access), plus one additional layer: visible acts of care are witnessed by peers, in voice, at places in the village.
- A child returns from raking the elderly neighbor's lawn. Evidence is confirmed. Credit accrues.
- The next time the child is at the square, and speaks, their voice carries the small mark of what they have done. Not as a badge. As a small tone the village adds — a chime, a warmth in the audio treatment — that peers perceive.
- Peers who consistently accumulate that mark become the children the other children want to be near.
- Peers who consistently do not become the children whose loudness carries less weight.
The village does not lecture the child on this. The village lets the mechanic operate, and children figure it out the way children have always figured out who is worth being around.
What this refuses
- It refuses to hide that status is being engineered. Honesty about the engineering is the doctrine.
- It refuses to point status at performance-for-the-platform.
- It refuses to let cruelty become a status signal by being funny or transgressive.
- It refuses to let popularity become disconnected from behavior.
- It refuses to publish rankings or leaderboards. Status is perceived socially, not tabulated.
What this commits to
- Peer status in the village points at kindness, service, repair, and care for those who cannot easily reciprocate.
- The pointing is done through the mechanics of Laws 4 and 5, plus small perceptible marks in voice and presence.
- Children discover the alignment through play, not through instruction.
- Adults stewarding the village monitor the alignment and can adjust the mechanics if the signal drifts.
The generational stake
The children in the village will grow up in a community where being kind is what makes you cool. Where doing something for someone who cannot pay you back is what makes the other children want to sit near you. Where the peer who helps the newcomer is admired more than the peer who is loud.
Those children become adults for whom that alignment is native. They will run the institutions, the companies, the towns, the countries. The alignment is the civilization.
The current substrate is producing the opposite alignment at scale. The village is a bet that we can produce the correct one, on the same device, in the same generation, before the window closes.
