Design Law 1 — Time Partition
Lesson mode and common mode never overlap.

The law
The console has two modes.
- Lesson mode. The child is inside the curriculum. The handbook, the game loop, the seven tests, the A-glyph exercises. Attention is with the material.
- Common mode. The child is in the village. They can move, find friends, talk, build, gather evidence, look at what other children have made.
The modes do not overlap. During lesson mode, the village is not reachable. During common mode, the lesson does not intrude.
Why
Attention is finite. A child asked to hold curriculum in one hand and social presence in the other holds neither well. Every existing children's platform blurs the two — a lesson that can be interrupted by a notification, a friend who can ping during homework, a feed that runs alongside the study surface. The blurring is not neutral. It trains the child to a fragmented attention posture, and the fragmentation persists into adulthood.
The village refuses this. Learning and socializing are both good; they are both important; they are not the same thing and they do not share time.
How the partition is enforced
- The steward (school, diocese, parish network) sets the lesson-time window on the console. This is the same authority that sets bell schedules.
- During lesson-time, the console shows only the lesson surface. The village is not visible.
- During common-time, the lesson surface closes cleanly and the village opens.
- A child cannot toggle between modes at will. The steward controls the boundary.
- Parents in family-mode deployments set the boundary at home. Same mechanism.
The console does not negotiate with the child on this. The partition is doctrine.
What common time looks like
Common time is not the whole rest of the day. Common time is a bounded window — an after-school block, a lunch block, a weekend window — set by the steward. Outside common time and lesson time, the console rests. The child puts the device down.
This is intentional. A village that is always open is a feed. A village that opens at named times, closes at named times, and stays quiet in between is a place. Children go to places. Children do not "go to" feeds; feeds arrive.
What this refuses
- It refuses to notify the child during lesson-time. No pings, no red dots, no "your friend is online."
- It refuses to run the village in the background during lesson-time even in silent form. State is paused entirely.
- It refuses to let the child ask for common-time early. The steward controls the schedule.
- It refuses to keep the village open past the closing bell to boost engagement.
What this commits to
- Lesson-time is protected from social interruption absolutely.
- Common-time is protected from academic interruption absolutely.
- Both windows have hard start and end.
- The child can trust that when the village is open, it is open; and when it is closed, it is closed. No ambiguity, no negotiation.
Doctrinal note
Older village architectures — the actual villages humans lived in for most of history — did this without technology. There was work-time, school-time, chore-time, and there was the time when the children went to the square, the field, the creek, and were together. The times were bounded by daylight, by bells, by seasons, by shared understanding. Children did not carry the square in their pocket at 2am.
The console restores that bounded rhythm on a device that would otherwise dissolve it.
