Design Law 2 — Voice-First Interface
Voice is the surface. The screen is a compass.

The law
The child interacts with the village primarily through voice. They speak. The village responds — through the voice of other children, through simple audio orientation, or through a compact text line on the screen. The child's fingers are not the primary input. The child's eyes are not the primary attention.
The screen exists. It shows short, simple text — where the child is, where a friend is, what the child was just asked. The screen is a compass. A compass is glanced at. A compass is not looked into.
No window is better than any window.
Why
Fingers on screens is the current-state harm. The thumb-scroll gesture, refined by every social platform over fifteen years, is the delivery mechanism for the precognition-loading, the fear-anchored framing, the dopamine-tuned engagement loop. The gesture is the vector.
The village refuses the gesture. Not by making it unpleasant. By not requiring it in the first place. If the child never learns to scroll for social contact, the child never develops the reflex. If the child grows up talking to their phone the way they would talk to a person standing next to them, the child does not develop the parasocial screen-relationship that has hollowed out the current cohort.
Voice is also higher-bandwidth than text for children. A child's voice carries emotion, hesitation, warmth, laughter, in ways that a text message never will. Children who talk hear each other. Children who text learn to mistake typing for talking.
What voice looks like in the village
- The child says: "Where is Marc?" The village responds in voice: "Marc is at the bridge." No map, no ping, no visual overlay. The child holds "Marc is at the bridge" in mind and moves toward it.
- The child says: "Tell Marc I'm coming." The village passes the message as voice, in the child's own voice, to Marc. Marc hears his friend, not a notification.
- The child says: "Take me to my fort." The village moves them. The child's attention stays on the world they are imagining, not on menus.
- The child says: "What did I do today?" The village responds in voice with a short summary. The child does not scroll a log.
What the screen shows
The screen shows the minimum required to orient a child who cannot navigate by voice alone in a given moment. Examples:
- The name of the place the child is currently in ("The Bridge," "The Square," "My Fort")
- A one-line indication of nearby friends by callsign glyph
- The current prompt the village is waiting on ("Waiting for Marc's reply")
- The child's own status in short text
It does not show: feeds, thumbnails, avatars, animated content, notifications, badges, counters, autoplay, video previews, image grids, timelines, activity indicators, or any surface designed to be looked at for longer than a glance.
What voice does not replace
- Reading stays a first-class capacity. The handbook is a book. Children read it. The village does not read for them.
- Writing stays a first-class capacity. When a child chooses to write — a message, a name for a place, a mark on their fort — the writing is done by them, not composed by the platform.
- Evidence (Law 4) uses images. Photos are visual by necessity. The screen renders them when the child chooses to view them, and stops rendering them when the child looks away.
Voice-first does not mean voice-only. Voice-first means voice is the default; other channels are used where they are structurally required; and the finger-scroll is not one of the structurally required cases.
What this refuses
- It refuses to build a rich visual interface even when it could.
- It refuses to add "just one more" visual affordance for engagement's sake.
- It refuses avatars. The child is a voice and a callsign glyph.
- It refuses stickers, reaction icons, emoji reactions, animated response bubbles.
- It refuses to make the compass into a window.
What this commits to
- The default interaction is voice.
- The screen is glanceable, not immersive.
- Any feature that requires sustained looking must justify itself against the imagination cost and the finger-scroll risk.
- The village is designed to work with the child's eyes closed. If it works that way, it works.
The generational stake
The children formed on voice-first surfaces will grow up with an ear trained for other people rather than a thumb trained for feeds. That ear is the substrate for actual community, actual friendship, actual conversation. The current cohort is losing that ear because their formative device conversation was thumb-typed and read on a screen. The village is a bet that we can preserve the ear.
