Apple's Feedback Principle

Apple's Human Interface Guidelines describe feedback as the design discipline of acknowledging every action and explaining every transition. The principle is grounded in a simple premise: when a person does something, they need to know the system heard them. When they move from one state to another, they need to understand how they got there.

From Apple's publicly available HIG on feedback:

Apple's feedback principle is fundamentally optimistic in its design stance: the system celebrates correct interactions and uses transitions to teach what comes next, never to punish or confuse.


Application to EVE Glyph Design Children's Materials

For children, feedback is not a nice-to-have — it is the mechanism through which a child knows whether they understood something. Apple's feedback principle, applied to child-facing educational design, translates into a set of clear commitments about how the A-glyph exercise should respond to what a child does.

Every correct construction gets a clear acknowledgement. When a child successfully places a geometric element — draws the triangle correctly, snaps the circle into alignment, completes the half-circle arc — the exercise should respond immediately and distinctly. That response should feel celebratory in proportion to the achievement: a visual highlight, a gentle sound, a haptic pulse on supported devices, or some combination. The child should never wonder whether they got it right.

Feedback integrated, not interrupting. Following Apple's principle of integrating feedback into the UI, acknowledgements should appear within the glyph canvas itself — a glow on the element just placed, a brief color shift, a completion animation that shows the element settling into its correct position. Pop-up dialogs and modal alerts should be reserved only for moments that genuinely require the child's attention before proceeding.

Mistakes get gentle correction, never punishment. When a child makes an error — misplaces an element, draws outside the guide, taps the wrong target — the feedback should be neutral or warm in tone. A gentle nudge animation (the element sliding back to its origin), a soft sound cue, or a brief on-screen hint. There is no count of errors, no failure state, no experience of having done something wrong that cannot be immediately undone. The exercise does not score mistakes; it redirects toward the correct path.

Transitions explain. When the exercise moves from one construction step to the next, the transition should show the child where they are going. The completed element remains visible; the new element's guide appears in a way that connects logically to what was just built. The child never experiences a jump cut — they experience a continuation.
