Apple's Accessibility Commitments
Apple has published its accessibility framework across its developer documentation and platform guidelines. The stated position is that accessibility features are not add-ons — they are designed from the start, for the widest possible range of people. (Source: Apple Accessibility)
Key accessibility technologies and principles from Apple's publicly available documentation:
Vision
- VoiceOver — A screen reader that provides audible or braille descriptions of UI controls,
text, and images in over 60 languages and locales. Accessible interfaces must provide accessibilityLabel values for every meaningful element. (Source: Apple Accessibility)
- Dynamic Type — A system-level feature allowing people to choose text sizes for better
readability. Interfaces must scale and remain legible at all Dynamic Type sizes, including the largest accessibility sizes (AX1–AX5). (Source: Apple HIG — Typography)
- Differentiate Without Color — An Apple display accommodation for color-vision differences.
Interfaces must not rely on color alone to convey information; shape, pattern, label, or position must carry the meaning in parallel. (Source: Apple Accessibility)
- Reduce Motion — A system setting that disables or minimizes non-essential animations.
Interfaces must remain comprehensible and functional when motion is removed. Motion must never be the only channel through which information is conveyed. (Source: Apple Accessibility)
Cognitive and Motor
- Guided Access — A protocol to restrict app functionality to specific areas, useful for

- Haptics — Tactile feedback via the Taptic Engine, usable for children who benefit from

- Speech synthesis —

Apple's design philosophy treats accessibility as a quality measure: an interface that works for the widest range of people is a better-designed interface, not merely a more inclusive one.
Application to EVE Glyph Design Children's Materials
Children's materials must be designed accessible from the first sketch. The EVE Glyph Design education program serves children across a range of ages, reading abilities, language backgrounds, and sensory profiles. Accessibility is not a retrofit — it is a design input.
Language: Spanish and English at minimum. The Operator's primary locales include Spanish and English. Every text element in the A-glyph exercise — labels, instructions, feedback messages, navigational cues — must be written in both languages, with translations reviewed for child-level vocabulary in both. Transliteration is not translation; the Spanish text must be calibrated for the reading level of the target age group, not merely word-for-word accurate.
Readability for children with dyslexia. Font selection should favor typefaces with strong letterform distinction — open apertures, clear differentiation between similarly shaped letters (b/d, p/q). Letter spacing (tracking) should lean generous. Line height should be at minimum 150% of the font size for body-level text. Avoid fonts that compress spacing or use decorative forms that reduce letterform clarity. Following Apple's guidance, Regular and Medium weights are preferred; Thin and Light weights should not be used for instructional text.
Tactile and audio paths for non-readers. Consistent with Apple's speech synthesis and haptic capabilities, the A-glyph exercise should offer:
- Audio narration of each instruction step in both Spanish and English
- Haptic acknowledgement for correct element placement (on supported devices)
- Icon-based navigation that does not require reading to proceed
These paths ensure that a child who cannot yet read reliably — or who is working in their second language — can still engage with the full exercise through audio and touch.
Color choices that work across common color-vision profiles. The four primary forms of color vision difference (deuteranopia, protanopia, tritanopia, and achromatopsia) must all be considered when selecting the palette used to differentiate the A-glyph's geometric elements. Following Apple's "Differentiate Without Color" principle, each element must also be distinguished by shape, label, or position — never by color alone. The palette should be validated with a color-blindness simulator before implementation.
