08 — Callouts and Leader Lines
Apple's Callout Patterns
Apple uses a consistent callout and leader-line system across its product photography, hardware diagrams, and instructional support materials. While the Human Interface Guidelines focus primarily on interactive UI design, Apple's visual communication system for product explanation — visible across Apple Support documentation, hardware teardown diagrams, and product overview pages — reflects a refined set of conventions that are worth examining as a benchmark for instructional design.
Observed conventions from Apple's publicly available product and support materials:
- Thin, clean lines. Leader lines in Apple's hardware and instructional diagrams are rendered
at the minimum weight necessary to trace the eye from label to subject. The line itself is not a design feature — it is a guide. Heavy lines draw attention to themselves rather than to the subject being labeled. (Source: Apple Support)
- Geometric anchors. Leader lines typically end with a small circle or dot at the point of
contact with the subject — confirming that the line is pointing to a specific, precise location rather than a general area. The anchor is small enough not to obscure the detail it marks.
- Terse labels. Apple's callout labels are compact. They name the element or feature without
explanation: "Lightning connector," "Face ID," "Side button." Explanation, if needed, comes in the body text below the diagram — not in the callout itself. The callout's job is identification, not description.
- Lines never cross each other. In any Apple diagram with multiple callouts, leader lines are
arranged so they do not intersect. Crossing lines create visual knots that force the eye to untangle before it can follow either line. Apple's diagrams achieve this through deliberate arrangement of label positions around the subject.
- Lines point into the subject, not away. Leader lines originate at the label and move toward
the detail being annotated. The endpoint — the anchor — is inside or touching the relevant part of the subject. This directionality is consistent: the Operator's eye follows the line toward the thing being named, not away from it.
- Labels positioned outside the subject's visual field. Callout labels are arranged in the
margin or perimeter around the subject. They do not overlap the illustration or photograph they are annotating. The subject remains fully visible; the labels orbit it.
- Consistent label alignment. In a multi-callout diagram, labels on the same side of the
subject are aligned to a common vertical or horizontal axis. This alignment creates visual order and reduces the scanning effort required to read the diagram.
These conventions are visible across Apple's published product overview pages, Apple Support hardware guides, and the instructional materials distributed with Apple hardware. They represent a mature, field-tested approach to directing attention in technical and instructional contexts.
Application to EVE Glyph Design Children's Materials
When the A-glyph teaching panels explain a geometric element — labeling the triangle, the circle, or the half-circle — the callout system should follow Apple's conventions. Children's materials benefit from precisely directed attention because children do not yet have the visual filtering experience to disambiguate a cluttered diagram on their own.
Point into the glyph from outside. Each callout label for an A-glyph element should be positioned in the margin or perimeter of the glyph canvas. The leader line originates at the label and moves inward, landing on the specific element being named. The child's eye follows the line from the name to the thing — the correct order for learning.
Thin lines, legible labels. Leader lines should be the minimum weight at which they are visible against the background — typically 1–2 pt at standard resolution. Label text should be larger than the leader line suggests is necessary; children need more reading room than adults. A good starting point is 14–16 pt minimum for callout labels in a child-facing diagram.
One callout per element, at most three callouts per panel. Following the principle that complexity should be minimized, each panel should label only the element being introduced in that step. The triangle panel labels the triangle. The circle panel labels the circle. Simultaneous labeling of all three elements belongs only on a summary panel, where the child is reviewing a completed glyph they have already built.
Lines never cross. Plan label positions before finalizing any callout diagram. If more than one element is labeled on a panel, arrange the labels so their leader lines radiate outward without intersecting. This may require placing some labels above the glyph and some to the side, rather than clustering them all in one margin.
Anchor at the element's boundary. The leader line endpoint should touch the edge of the element being labeled, or land at a visually clear point within it — not float in the vicinity. Precision at the anchor reinforces the specificity of the label. The child should see exactly which part of the glyph is being named.
